Lithium Ion Battery Technology: Powering a Greener and Safer Future for Oregon’s School Buses

As parents and community members of Community + Parents for Public Schools (CPPS), our advocacy often focuses on funding and systemic change within our districts. However, a key part of "building a sustainable network" for our children involves looking at the infrastructure that carries them to school every day. The shift toward the Lithium Ion Battery in our student transportation systems is not just an environmental choice—it is a health and safety priority for Oregon’s students.

Protecting Student Health with Clean Air Traditional diesel school buses contribute to poor air quality, which can exacerbate respiratory issues like asthma among our students. By transitioning to electric school buses powered by advanced Lithium Ion Battery technology, we can eliminate tailpipe emissions at the source. Providing our children with a "high-quality education" should include ensuring they arrive at school breathing clean air.

Reinvesting Energy Savings into the Classroom One of our core missions at CPPS is to "protect K-12 funding." Electric buses have significantly lower maintenance and fuel costs compared to diesel fleets. Every dollar saved by utilizing Lithium Ion Battery efficiency is a dollar that can be redirected back into Oregon classrooms, supporting teachers, arts programs, and updated learning materials.

A Call for Sustainable Infrastructure As we participate in events like Salem Lobby Day, it is vital that we advocate for revenue reform that includes modernization. Supporting state grants for electric fleets allows our districts to modernize without straining local budgets.

By embracing the Lithium Ion Battery as the backbone of our transportation infrastructure, we aren't just changing how our kids get to school—we are advocating for their health, their environment, and the fiscal health of our school districts.

Let’s keep working together to ensure every Oregon child has a safe, clean, and well-funded path to success!
